Advanced Sailing

FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 7 YEARS OLD, WHO HAVE SAILED IN A REGATTA.

This program will provide sailors the opportunity to develop their racing and teamwork skills. Building on the skills learned in other classes, these sailors will work on improving their sailing prowess as well as develop racing skills. Sailors receive on-shore chalk talks in preparation for on-the-water drills.

These students will sail in the Belle of the West Regatta as well as other regattas at the discretion of the coaches.

Ownership of an Optimist is strongly encouraged. Sailors are expected to maintain the DYC equipment as if it were their own and return boats in the same condition, minus regular wear and tear, that they received them.

To Our Parents and Race Sailors:
  • Here is the list of regattas which members of the DYC Opti and 420 race teams may participate in each summer.  It is our hope that members of the race team will be able to participate in many of these regattas. Instructors/coaches in consultation with the Fleet Captain and program director will determine which boats and fleets participate in the various regattas and communicate directly to the sailors and the parents.  A regatta may be added in any season at the discretion of the coaches.

  •
  • Summer 2019 Regattas:

  •

    OPTIS:

Monday, July 1 Stage Harbor Opti Regatta

Wed - Thurs, July 24-25 Wianno Opti Regatta

Friday, August 2 Belle of the West

Thursday, August 15 Barnstable Green Fleet

    420s:

Monday, July 8 West Dennis Invitational

Friday, August 2 Belle of the West

Wednesday, August 7, Hyannis Youth Invitational

All race team sailors - opti and 420 - must participate in our club’s annual Belle of the West regatta. Advanced racing sailors, if ready as determined by the coaches, may participate in the Belle, too

A coach will attend Opti-only regattas provided there is a minimum of three DYC boats participating in this regatta.  If there are less than 3 Opti racers competing, then it is the sole responsibility of parents to bring the sailors and the boats to the regattas.

The deciding factors for participation in any regatta are sailor readiness and safety.

Regatta registration and fees are the responsibility of the individual sailor.  Regatta registration links may be found on the Southern Massachusetts Sailing Association website OR on the hosting yacht club’s website.  We strongly recommend that you register at least two weeks in advance for most regattas in order to reserve a spot. In addition, all members of the race team should become members of the US Sailing Association.

Instructors/coaches will coordinate with parents about the transportation of boats to the regattas.  It is the responsibility of the parents to make arrangements for the transportation of sailors to the regattas.  As a prerequisite for attendance at any regatta, all race team sailors must help with the loading and unloading of boats to and from the regattas, as well as at the regatta.  Failure to help will result in forfeiture of a sailor’s right to race in that regatta.

Participating sailors should remember to bring life jackets, closed toe shoes, whistle, hat, sunscreen, sweatshirts, spray jackets, sailing gloves, bailers, and a change of clothes.  Since refreshments vary by club, it is highly recommended that the sailors bring extra water and snacks.
